Is Chlorella organic? Is there any certified organic Chlorella on the market?
The Organic label is governed by European regulations accepted by all EU member states. The European regulation on organic production of microalgae was updated in 2017! You can find microalgae microalgae with a true organic label according to European regulations since 2017.
Why?
Because microalgae didn’t fit into any of the categories defined by the European regulatory bodies. There is now a set of specifications for obtaining the “Bio” label.
The fact that the authorities were slow to define the rules of good practice for obtaining organic certification certification is due to the specification of fertilizers. In fact, the need to use organic fertilizers imposed by organic regulations makes the cultivation of microalgae in an aqueous medium a complex undertaking. The high bacterial load of organic fertilizers is incompatible with safe production in an aqueous environment. The associated risk is the production of microalgae loaded with toxic bacteria.
Long before 2017, microalgae (chlorella, spirulina) presented as “organic ” were already on the market, mainly from Asia. This label was not legitimate.
eChlorial has been offering organic Spirulina and organic Chlorella grown in Europe for as long as European regulations have existed.
European regulations
According to EC regulation no. 834/2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products, and its latest update, Council regulation (EC) no. 967/2008 of September 29, 2008, freshwater microalgae did not fall into any of the categories considered.
As a result, no Chlorella was eligible for the “Organic” label in compliance with European regulations before 2017.
Changes in European regulations
A text amending the current regulations on organic production has been defined at EU member state level. This text concerns, among other things, micro-algae. It adds specific organic production rules for “micro algae”.
This amendment has been in force since 2017, the date of its publication in the Official Journal.
